Latest WBC Rumor: A-Rod to Play for USA After All?!
Wednesday, January 04, 2006
ESPN is reporting that A-Rod has decided to participate in the WBC this spring, despite his heartwarming (vomit) and uber-PC statement last month declaring that he loved the Dominican Republic and USA too much to choose between the two. Apparently, A-Rod has decided that he will play favorites after all, and is “expected to announce this week that he will play for the U.S. in the 16-team event in March”.

This is still technically a rumor, but assuming it is true – and yeah yeah, I know, what they say about assuming – I’d love to hear what A-Rod’s many public relations advisors had to say about this situation. From his eagerness to play to bursting with duel national pride only to reneg and settle on the USA, the entire ordeal is borderline nauseating.

As my favorite Mets fan put it: “Well played, Slappy McBluelips. Could not have handled that worse”.

Slappy McBluelips? Sounds more like one of those immature, ignorant Red Sox fans. Really though Y. Chick, what is wrong with you? First your bizarre take on Johnny Damon going to a hair stylist(metrosexual?!), and questioning his manhood, which was way off base and way stupid, and now your posting derogatory slurs about Alex Rodriguez, the Yanks MVP from last year. Strange and disconcerting to say the least.

    Dear Whatever,

I appreciate your candid comments. I do see where you're coming from - - and believe me, I love alex rodriguez and am thrilled to have him on the Yanks. the way he handled his participation in the WBC, though, is embarassing, bottom line. i'm actually glad he'll be playing in the WBC, it will be great to watch him. I just don't see a need to encourage media ciruses like the one he created with the public announcement etc. the ridiculous "slappy mcbluelips" comment was clearly a joke...recall the game vs the sox last year...

As for damon, I never questioned his "manhood"...just pointed out the silly grandstanding he preformed with his "makeover".

I love the Yankees - clearly - but I'm not above admitting that the team I love can do funny or strange things.

anyway, i'm sorry if i offended you in any way. rest assured that my admiration and interest in the yanks is in full swing.

    Y. Chick,

I have to give you credit for not getting too bent out of shape at someone who levels some perhaps too harsh of criticism at you. That's to be admired.

I'm very aware that Alex Rodriguez is a quirky individual. He seems to overanalyze a lot of things and is way too concerned with his image and what people think of him. And this seems to hurt, rather than help him. On his playing in the WBC tournament, from several of the articles that I've read on that subject, he initially planned on playing for the USA, but was then encouraged by a lot of his relatives, and especially his mother, to play for the Dominican Republic team. Now, if this truly was the case, you could kind of see his dilemma. So, in order not to offend someone he says "okay fine, I won't play at all". Now what's happened since, to make him reconsider, I don't know. Did his mother quit begging him to play for the Dominican Republic team? Was it pressure from Major league baseball, who want their biggest stars to participate? Who knows? But once again, Arod has found himself in a position where people are taking shots at him, probably because he didn't want to disappoint someone, not because he was trying to make a big deal out of who he would play for.

I follow the Red Sox very closely. (It's always good to know what your biggest enemy is up to). I see a lot of that A-Fraud,Slappy McBluelips garbage at Boston websites. I didn't expect to see it at a Yankee blog, from someone who is supposed to be a Yankee fan. Jokingly, or not. Perhaps that explains my dismay with your comment.

Anyway, no big deal. Water under the bridge. By the way, an attractive woman who knows a lot about baseball is a rare and marvelous thing.
