B.Q.E. O' the Week: Baby I Got Your Money |
Sunday, June 22, 2008 |
Padres annoucers Matt Vasgersian and Mark "The Mudcat" Grant are bar none my favorite baseball announcers (sorry, Mikey Kay... SEEYA.) They may be uber-homers, but they're entertaining, insightful, and never afraid to mention something that might be just a tad bit controversial or offensive. Case in point today: There are certain agents in baseball - fans know who they are - their tactic, it's borderline extortion, the things they try to do on behalf of their clients. Yes, Matty, I think we all know who you're talking about; if I'm on his wavelength I'd assume one of those supposed extortion artists is none other than Scotty "Big Bucks" Boras. While I understand that his job is to get his players the best deals he can wager, I think MV is right on the money (hardy har har) on this one. His demands have harmed the progress that the MLB has made in terms of parity, preventing lower-payroll teams from having a short at his clients; even his amateur draftee clients demand too high a price to be available to most teams. Is it wrong in a business sense? Probably not. Ethically? I think so. Labels: best. quote. ever, haha...ha. |

First off, I really can't stand this need for parity. Why? Smaller market teams can change how they do business, instead many of these owners pocket the money this socialistic system that baseball has in place, rather than putting it back into the team.
You are young, you forget the days when the Yankees stunk. George Steinbrenner invested heavily into the team, which caused it regain status and revinue.
Boras isn't a great agent, he has caused troubles for some of his clients, but its the players themselves that put their desires to him.
Frankly, its against all that America was built on to have this supporting of smaller market teams while fleecing those teams who are successful.
How would you feel about being taxed 50% or more on every dime you make so some bum on the street who never worked a day in his life could live in a house while you have to struggle to make ends meet? The premise is the same.
There are ways to combat too high a pay scale. Don't pay it. Work on scouting better. Improve your marketing. Be a bottom feeder like Tampa Bay has so you get first draft picks for years.
Success is what brings in money to teams. Its why the RS have so many followers now. Those bandwagoners jumping on to be with winners. Those same fans who leave if you don't have a championship within a few years.
Being a Yankee Fan, how great do you feel about knowing that every dollar you spend supporting the Yankees has over half of it going to their opposition? I don't like it because I don't support them, I don't root for them.
Salary caps, socialistic taxes, its all the same thing and is anti-American.
