If they really don't want Torre, they should settle for Girardi over Mattingly. The experience (especially with young talent) over Mattingly should be the deciding factor.

Plus, if I were Mattingly, I'd be scared to death of failing in New York. For someone who didn't win them a World Series he's considered a God, and to become their manager and fail, well that would be tough to deal with.

I'm surpised you didn't mention Pena who is beloved by most of the younger players like Cano,Melky.And has a very down to earth personality.Also like Torre he was a catcher(like other great mangers).

Also Pena has more manger expirence then Girardi.Also remember Girardi team still was under 500 and sucked after the second half of that season.

My vote is Mattingly he's the better choice.After getting rid of a great Yankee you have to replace him with a great legend.Girardi's great but he won't survive the New York media when there's trouble.

No Pena - It's already bad enough he's gone to the dark side.

Girardi will get fired (maybe that's part of the plan?) as soon as he tells cashman, ussay and uday to shove it.

Totally, totally agree with you. I can't stand another stoic, emotionless face/presence in that dugout. Girardi is the man.
