Payroll, particularly in the AL East, where there have been discrepancies in spending as large as $180 million, quite often correlates at least roughly to the success of a team. Last year, as usual, the top two spenders in the league (the Yanks and Sox) wound up making the playoffs, while the low men on the payroll totem poll (the Rays, Marlins, Nationals, and Pirates) all finished at the bottom of the barrel. There are exceptions, of course, but generally speaking the top spenders tend to finish towards to the top of their divisions while the cheapskates remain at the bottom. In the next five years, the Rays will top the Yankees in the standings AT LEAST once. Bank on it.
