Why hello there, Yankees fans and folks who accidentally clicked my link from a Google search for "Kate Hudson A-Rod Breakup"! 'Tis I, the Yankees Chick - a gal you've likely forgotten thanks to my abysmal failure to update this sucker even once in the past 5+ months.
Yes, it's been a minute or two since I last blogged (and longer still since I kept this site updated on a truly regular basis), and I apologize for my absence. No, I haven't stopped obsessing over the Yankees (come on now), nor have I given up on the blog - 2009 was simply a wildly busy year in the land of the YC. Even whilst I was forced to push the bloggity to the back burner last year, I always intended to fire it back up as soon as one of three things happened: 1) I finished school, thus freeing up my evenings for bloggin' 2) Vince McMahon hired me as a high-paid special consultant for the WWE, with my sole responsibility being to watch every episode of Raw and Smackdown and offer suggestions on how the storylines and characters could be improved (for the love of christ, can John Cena and Randy Orton not be in a title match at just one PPV?), thus freeing up my days for bloggin' 3) Something ridiculous in the baseball world fired me up so much that I decided I simply MUST get back on the blogging saddle pronto, regardless of my lack of time to do so. I'm still in school, and Mr. McMahon has yet to seek out my valuable services, so you can all thank Mark McGwire for inspiring me to dredge up my blogger.com password and get back to work! If you're a die-hard MLB Network viewer like myself, perhaps you saw this little nugget yourself last night:  The fuck? What year is it? The most shocking thing about this seemingly out-of-nowhere Big Mac news is that Harold and the gang at the MLB Network failed to mention what seems in my opinion to be the obvious motivation for such a move: a better chance at Hall of Fame election. Since becoming eligible for the HOF in 2007, it's become abundantly clear that the voters have no interest in allowing McGwire into Cooperstown (I know, I know - it's shocking that they don't believe his steroid denials, isn't it?), and making a brief comeback may give him a fighting chance. By rejoining the field of active players, Big Mac would no longer be eligible for the HOF for the time being, but once he re-retires and waits out another 5 years for renewed eligibility, attitudes may have changed enough to give him a chance at election.
Cuz seriously, there's no other reason for the man to even consider re-joining the MLB. I don't think he's that hard up for cash, and I certainly don't think elderly pinch hitters are such a rare commodity that the Cardinals are banging down his door begging him to return.
That's it for today - again, I apologize for my long absence, and I look forward to writing much more in 2010. Stay tuned this weekend for my thoughts on the Yanks' off-season moves thus far (fare thee well, sweet Melk-Man...)

What is it about Scott Boras that seemingly hypnotizes otherwise sane people into behaving as if he and his clients are eligible for some sort of special treatment the rest of the world shall never receive?
He's pulled a number of stunts over the years that made me cringe, but what really makes my blood boil is the ludicrous responses he manages to illicit out of club owners and management as a result of these antics! After his and Manny's latest refusal of yet another unnecessarily generous contract offer from the Dodgers, while the rest of us were rolling our eyes and mocking Manny, Dodgers owner Frank McCourt had this to say:
We love Manny Ramirez. And we want Manny back, but we feel we are negotiating against ourselves. When his agent finds those ‘serious offers’ from other clubs, we’ll be happy to re-start the negotiations. Um... really? I do appreciate the little sarcastic jab he tossed in there directed right at Boras ("suuuuuuure buddy, you just let us know when you find those other offers, *cough* LIAR *cough"), but why is he still drooling over Manny? If he doesn't really believe that Boras has any other offers out there - and I am with him on that one - then why are you falling all over yourself to proclaim your love for that jackass?!

At the beginning of the season, poor performance can be overlooked. Some dudes can't play in the cold, some need a little time to get rolling, others are still rehabbing nagging injuries. Oftentimes these excuses prove to be spot on and those slow-starters get back into good form and make us forget they barely made it to the game at the start of the season - look at the Giambino, for example - but there are some dudes for whom the slow-start syndrome does not dissipate. The season is half over now (!) and henceforth I think we can now officially take those "slumpers" out of the slow-start category and file them as 2008 failures*. It's been a wild week for the Yanks, with a couple tough losses, 2 Joba mini-starts, and a few classic come-from-behinders to top things off quite nicely. What about the rest of the league, though? Surely they did something last week. Let's examine those other dudes... in 10 words or less! AL East Who would have thought it'd be a 3-horse race?Boston: Manny Being Manny Jackass.
Tampa Bay: Could be the real deal. Also, I love a good brawl. Toronto: Bullpen blowing it. No chance with Sox/Yanks/Rays(!) anyway. Baltimore: Where washed-up veterans go to die. Time sure does fly when you're having fun, doesn't it, folks? And by "having fun," I of course mean "watching your team struggle like a Galapagos turtle on its ample back to right itself and zoom ahead of the hare that is the rest of the AL East." With their still sub-.500 record and more wounded soldiers heading to the DL Resort and Casino all the time, I think it's time to take a breather from my usual Yankees chit chat and take a gander at how the other 29 teams in the league are faring these days - as usual, I've got just ten words to use for each of them. I hope everyone had a delightful weekend, whether you were enjoying a ball game, honoring your mother with a card you found in the 99cent section of Hallmark, or watching Lifetime movies for 48 straight hours. Mondays are usually depressing with the school and/or work week firing back up, so I have a treat for you to read whilst you take your lunch break - another edition of the patented (lies) Rest o' the League Round-up! Nothing super fancy, (I'm not writing books here munecas), just a few notes on what major moves the teams made over the winter and a thought or two on their upcoming season. Welcome to the 21st of 30 "2008 Team Previews", where I'm - you guessed it! - offering up a little preview of the 2008 season for each of the teams. Nothing super fancy, (I'm not writing books here munecas), just a few notes on what major moves the teams made over the winter and a thought or two on their upcoming season. I'm running out of time since the season is underway, but I'll try to churn out these last few asap! I'm going in reverse order of 2007 standings, so next up is.... Detroit Tigers 2007 Record: .543 (88-73), 2nd place in AL Central 2006 Record: .586 (95-67), AL Pennant
Who’s Out: Jason Johnson (P), Jair Jurrjens (P), Gorkys Hernandez (OF), Jose Capellan (P) Who’s In: Dontrelle Willis (P), Edgar Renteria (SS), Denny Bautista (P), Miguel Cabrera (3B)
Notes: Offense = gold. I've got them pegged as having the fourth-best record of the season, mainly because of their bats. The lineup includes the likes of Cabrera, Sheff, Pudge, and Guillen, a veritable monster for opposing pitchers. Most teams have played just one game thus far this season, and our poor Yankees have played ZERO, but after a few glances at each team my honed YC baseball meter already has a good handle on how the league is shaping up. So confident am I in my insightful future-telling abilities, I have no qualms about making bold predictions in today's Top Ten... Top Ten 2008 Final Win-Loss Records
Best record is #1, and backwards on up from there
10) Atlanta Braves. Watch out, Phillies and Mets. 9) San Diego Padres. The pitching is just too good to fail. Unless Pavano pays them a visit... then they're screwed. 8) Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Orange County of California of USA of Earth of Milky Way Galaxy. Still don't think the Mariners are good enough to make a run at the division. 7) Los Angeles Dodgers. So long as Torre keeps benching Juan Pierre, they're good to go 6) Cleveland Indians. Piiiiitching and gnat-impervious. 5) Chicago Cubs. No holes anywhere that I can see. It's them or the Mets in the Series. 4) Detroit Tigers. Crushing offense. 3) Boston Red Sox. They'll finish one win shy of the Yankees because the Yanks will win the season series. 2) New York Yankees. See above. 1) New York Mets. One word: Pitching. See you in the Series? Welcome to the 20th of 30 "2008 Team Previews", where I'm - you guessed it! - offering up a little preview of the 2008 season for each of the teams. Nothing super fancy, (I'm not writing books here munecas), just a few notes on what major moves the teams made over the winter and a thought or two on their upcoming season. I'm running out of time since the season is underway, but I'll try to churn out these last few asap! I'm going in reverse order of 2007 standings, so next up is....
 New York Mets 2007 Record: .543 (88-74), 2nd place in NL East (sorry to remind you)
2006 Record: .599 (97-65), 1st place in NL East
Who’s Out: Paul Lo Duca (C), Lastings Milledge (OF), Guillermo Mota (P), Carlos Gomez (OF), Phil Humber (P)
Who’s In: Johan Santana (P), Ryan Church (OF), Brian Schneider (C), Angel Pagan (OF), Brady Clark (OF), Matt Wise (P)
Notes: Mets fans are praying to whatever deity suits them (Jesus, Allah, Hashem, Greg Graffin, etc.) in thanks for having Johan Santana fall in their lap. The prospect offers from the Red Sox and Yankees were better than the four eventually shipped from Flushing to the Twin Cities, but it seemed the two AL East teams were just as happy to see The Best Pitcher On the Planet in the National League. Out of sight, out of mind.
All the better for Mets fans, as they add Santana to a team that, collapse or not, was one game away from the playoffs last year. The front four of Santana, Pedro, Maine and Perez can match up with anyone in the league. As long as Wright, Reyes and Beltran can remain relatively healthy, expect the Mets to go back to the postseason in 2008. In a short series fall scenario, having Santana and Pedro back-to-back could create some great matchups with Peavy and Young, Webb and Haren, or Smoltz and Hudson. If the older Mets are healthy at that point, I'll give them the edge to win the pennant.

Welcome to the 19th of 30 "2008 Team Previews", where I'm - you guessed it! - offering up a little preview of the 2008 season for each of the teams. Nothing super fancy, (I'm not writing books here munecas), just a few notes on what major moves the teams made over the winter and a thought or two on their upcoming season. I'm going in reverse order of 2007 standings, so next up is.... Chicago Cubs 2007 Record: .525 (85-77), 1st place in NL Central 2006 Record: .407 (66-96), last place in NL Central
Who’s Out: Cliff Floyd (OF), Steve Trachsel (P), Jaques Jones (OF), Craig Monroe (OF)
Who’s In: Omar Infante (INF), Tim Lahey (P), Kosuke Fukudome (OF), Jon Lieber (P)
Notes: Before I say anything else, make sure you take a gander at the 2006 and 2007 records. With a few changes - Soriano, Piniella - the team was able to surge from last place to first in just one year. This year, the team looks even better. I simply do not see any holes. The lineup has the likes of the aforementioned Soriano, Fukudome, Ryan The Riot, and Lee (hopefully Felix Pie isn't unable to bat due to that unfortunate and frightening twisted testicle). As for pitching, their bullpen is ridiculous with Wood, Marmol, et al. I would be VERY surprised if this team didn't finish at the top of their division again, and I personally have them pegged as the NL pennant winners. Of course, they will then lose to the Yankees in the World Series. Obv.

 Atlanta Braves 2007 Record: .556 (84-78), 3rd place in NL Central 2006 Record: .488 (79-83), 3rd place in NL Central Who’s Out: Jose Ascanio (P), Joey Devine (P), Jamie Richmond (P), Willy Aybar (INF), Chase Fontaine (INF), Tyler Yates (P), Andruw Jones (OF) Who’s In: Tom Glavine (P), Will Ohman (P), Omar Infante (INF), Mark Kotsay (OF), Jeff Ridgway (P), Todd Redmond (P), Ruben Gotay (INF), Notes: Jayson Stark has made the bold prediction that the Braves will be the WS champs in 2008, and while I have to respectfully disagree, I do concur that this team is dark horse of sorts. This is certainly the best roster they've had since their 2005 post-season bust. Their offense is packed with power-men like Tiexeira, Kotsay, the Chipster, and Francoeur, and let's not forget about the starting pitching: they have Hudson, Glavine, Smoltz, Hampton, and Jair Jurrjens holding down the fort. Most people are looking to the Phillies and Mets to battle it out this year, but I'm putting the Braves miles ahead of the Phillies - the Mets should be far more worried about this team. Next up: Chicago Cubs

Welcome to the 17th of 30 "2008 Team Previews", where I'm - you guessed it! - offering up a little preview of the 2008 season for each of the teams. Nothing super fancy, (I'm not writing books here munecas), just a few notes on what major moves the teams made over the winter and a thought or two on their upcoming season. I'm going in reverse order of 2007 standings, so next up is....
 Milwaukee Brewers 2007 Record: .512 (83-79), 2nd place in NL Central 2006 Record: .463 (75-87), 4th place in NL Central
Who’s Out: Corey Koskie (3B), Geoff Jenkins (OF), Johnny Estrada (C), Matt Wise (P), Who’s In: Guillermo Mota (P), Jason Kendall (C), David Riske (P), Eric Gagne (P), Mike Cameron (OF),
Notes: Despite what many would consider to be a disappointing 2007 season, the Brewers have kept much of the roster the same and have another chance to make the post-season this year for the first time since 1982. They've got a fantastic core of young players in Fielder, Bran, Hardy, Hall, and Weeks, and if Ben Sheets stays healthy their pitching is great, too - he's in a contract year, so maybe he'll be more motivated so stay in shape? Signing Mike Cameron was brilliant, as it actually fixed three positions. Braun was horrendous at third base last year and Hall is really an infielder, not a centerfielder, so Braun can head out to left field where he's less of a liability and Hall can play third while Cameron takes over in center. As for the Gagne pickup... time shall tell. If everyone stays relatively healthy, expect to see them in October and start peeing your pants.

Who’s In: Buck Coats (Utility Dude), David Eckstein (SS), Marco Scutaro (INF), Armando Benitez (P), Scott Rolen (3B) Notes: Like the poems I wrote on FanHouse for the NL West, I am writing some for the AL East teams as well. I did the one for the Jays today, and since there simply isn't much to say about the team I'm cheating and just linking you to the poem instead of trying to write something new here.
Here's the beginning...
The Blue Jays are a perennial also-ran
This isn't a particularly good time to be a fan
It's tough to compete against the Yankees and Sox
We all know how it's gonna look in that standings box
The Injury God has been quite a beast
There's just no contending in the AL East Read the rest! It's rhyme-alicious!
