Another Scare For Bobby Murcer

Former Yankee and current Yankees broadcaster Bobby Murcer is facing his second cancer scare in just over a year.

Bobby Murcer had a malignant brain tumor removed in January of 2007, and to the delight and relief of Yankees fans everywhere he bounced back relatively quickly, appearing on YES just a few months later on opening day. Unfortunately, it was reported in The Daily News today that the cancer may have returned. Doctors became concerned when an MRI scan turned up an area in his brain that looked disconcerting and scheduled a biopsy for Monday to determine if the cancer has returned.

Hankster Stein Has No Filter
You know that little part of your brain that stops you before you blurt out shit you might regret? The filter that prevents you from saying "damn your best friend is way hotter than you" or "I could do your job much better than you do, boss"?

Hank Stein does not have that filter. It was left out, a birth defect ... similar to the defect that causes people to wind up Republican.

In an interview with New York Times Play magazine (ps: has anyone ever heard of it and/or read it?), he gave some delightfully colorful commentary on the Red Sox and their Nation:
"Red Sox Nation? That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."
It's the new Best. Quote. Ever. Thank god Greg Graffin for the no-filter birth defect.

2008 Season Previews: Cincinnati Reds
Thursday, February 28, 2008
Welcome to the 7th of 30 "2008 Team Previews", where I'm - you guessed it! - offering up a little preview of the 2008 season for each of the teams. Nothing super fancy, (I'm not writing books here munecas), just a few notes on what major moves the teams made over the winter and a thought or two on their upcoming season. I'm going in reverse order of 2007 standings, so next up is....

reds mascotCincinnati Reds

2007 Record: 72-90 (.444), 5th place in NL Central

2006 Record: 80-82 (.494), 3rd place in NL Central

Who's Out: Craig Wilson (OF), Ramon Ortiz ( P), Jorge Cantu (INF),

Who's In: Manager Dusty Baker, Francisco Cordero (P), Ramon Ramirez (P), Josh Fogg (P), Jeremy Affeldt (P), Jeff Fiorentino (OF), Justin James (P), Edinson Volquez (P)

Notes: Dusty Baker is back to attack, and he's got a big task ahead of him: turn these Reds into something respectable and thrust them into playoff contention. Luckily for him, the team made some good moves this winter. They desperately needed pitching help - they tied with Florida last year for worst pitching in the league - and they addressed that need well. Signing Cordero was a huge move, and a wise one at that. David Weathers proved to be effective as closer last year, and with him and Cordero ready at the end of games the Reds will be in a much better spot. Their starting pitching is also looking pretty sharp, with Arroyo, Harang, and now Fogg. With the wacky way the NL Central always plays out, I see no reason why ol' Dustbag - with a little help from Griffey's personal injury gods - couldn't bring some success back to Cincy.

Next up: Chicago White Sox
Previous Profile: San Francisco Giants

Payroll, particularly in the AL East, where there have been discrepancies in spending as large as $180 million, quite often correlates at least roughly to the success of a team. Last year, as usual, the top two spenders in the league (the Yanks and Sox) wound up making the playoffs, while the low men on the payroll totem poll (the Rays, Marlins, Nationals, and Pirates) all finished at the bottom of the barrel. There are exceptions, of course, but generally speaking the top spenders tend to finish towards to the top of their divisions while the cheapskates remain at the bottom.

Pettitte's Journey Through PED-Ville Isn't Over

Andy Pettitte may have b een forgiven by his fans and teammates for his involvement in the Senator Mtichell steroids scandal, but unfortunately for him that doesn't mean that he's done with the legal aspect of the hoopla. Thanks to the new investigation into Roger Clemens's possible perjury, Pettitte almost surely will be drawn back into the drama. He has already testified against his longtime BFF (that's "best friend forever" for those of you older than 11), an act that no doubt hurt dear Andy deeply, but with this new investigation he fears he'll have to be subjected to yet another interview, this time by the feds.

If testifying to Congress against Clemens hurt Pettitte -- and I assure you it did -- then having to pound yet another nail into the coffin that is the case against the Rocket has got to tearing the man apart.

Dandy Andy Should Teach a Class on Apologizing
Wednesday, February 27, 2008
If there's one thing we can all learn from this off-season, it's that a little apologizing goes a long way.

In the wake of the Mitchell Report's release, we saw two types of people emerge: those who own up to errors in judgment and those who embark on denial crusades. Dandy Andy Pettitte fell into the former category, acknowledging the veracity of Mitchell's report in his case immediately with a public mea culpa. He didn't beat around the bush; he simply explained his reasons for using HGH (whether those reasons are true or even important is still up in the air in my mind), admitted it was a mistake and issued a sincere apology. He didn't stop there though - when he got to camp he approached each of his teammates individually and apologized yet again! None of the boys seemed to think that was necessary, but it was a nice gesture nonetheless. Hughsie remarked "that's just the kind of guy he is," which is a sentiment that warms my YC heart.

The fanbase as a whole seems to agree with Hughsie and I. On Monday, as Pettitte concluded his batting practice pitching session, the crowd of fans in Tampa gave him a standing "we forgive you and love you, Dandy Boy!" ovation. It is great to see that everyone is letting Pettitte off the hook, so to speak. His apologies have effectively cleared his reputation and he'll be able to perform much better this season without the cloud of anger from fans some thought might hang over his head.

Pettitte's quick return into the good graces of the fans makes me wonder whether Clemens would have gotten the same treatment had he followed suit and plead guilty (assuming he IS guilty, which I think most of us do, even though that's not really fair... eh, forget fair, he juiced and we all know it) rather than fight what appears to be a losing battle against McNameanie and the public. I know that I would have been more than happy to forgive him had he acknowledged his guilt, and I think - and correct me if I'm wrong here - that a large contingent of fans would have done likewise. Now that he's already denied and theres no turning back, though, if indisputable damning proof surfaces, I see no feasible way Clemens could get the same forgiveness we extended to Pettitte.

Yankees Play Intrasquad Game With Finesse Two Left Feet
In addition to my usual Yankees Chick posts, I have also begun writing regularly for AOL's FanHouse blog. I will post the beginnings of those articles here on YC, and then you'll have to click the link to jump on over to FH to read the rest... stick with me here, amigos!
--------------------------------------------------------

The Yankees kicked off their Spring Training "season" with an intrasquad game today, and while it brings the YC great joy to know that actual playing is going on down in Tampa Bay, the practice game wasn't exactly a display of flawless baseball. In fact, it was downright sloppy. After all was said and done, seven errors had been committed, eight walks were given up, and only one player had an extra base hit. The Geese ended up beating the Gators 6-2 (you can check out which Yanks played for which squad here).

The weather down in Tampa wasn't particularly conducive to comfortable play -- a healthy dose of wind whipped through the air throughout the game and the field was wet to boot -- and it was just a practice game, but it's doubtful that the boys came out of the game feeling too proud of themselves.

Red Sox Nab Colon for Some Minor League Action

The Red Sox are probably the last team about which one would think "boy, do they need some help with their pitching!", but they've added another name to their list of available hurlers in Bartolo Colon. Several teams, including the White Sox and Cardinals, had expressed an interest in Colon during the off-season, but the Sox managed to woo him with promises of a winning season and playoff contention and signed him to a minor league contract; if he makes the major league roster he would earn $1.2 million.

The large and in charge former Angel was once a Cy Young winning dominator, but over the past two years injuries have thwarted his pitching performance. After starting 33 games to the tune of a 3.48 ERA during his 2005 Cy Young season, he started just 10 in 2006 and 18 in 2007 and combined for a 5.72 ERA during those two dismal years.

Brian Cashman has had to deal with threats of being fired several times now -- what with all of the playoff busts -- but now that Big George Steinbrenner has surrendered much of his control to his sons, the firing talk has simmered down and extension talk has taken its place. Hank Steinbrenner, who has proven himself to be much more level-headed than his father when it comes to matters like hiring and firing (not to mention trades), has confirmed that he is open to discussions about a contract extension for The Cash Man.

Top Ten Tuesdays: This Glass of Yankees Juice is Half-Full
February is drawing to a close, and as we head into March, I must say that all seems right in the world at long last. I've been sprung from the clink, the boys are throwing the ball around down in Tampa, and Pavano has made his annual weak "See, world? I'm totally still a pitcher! Change my label from "Pavano must die" to "Pavano must LIVE" again, YC!" performance. Perhaps I'm simply projecting my glee over being free from the clutches of doctors (not to mention phlebotomists, YC's blood's mortal enemy), but I am feeling ridiculously positive about the upcoming season - and I think y'all should feel the same way. Need a reason? I've got ten of them!

Top Ten Reasons To Be Optimistic About The 2008 Yanks:

10) I-Ken
9) Joe Girardi
8) Santana is safely sequestered in Queens
7) Posada's still looking sharp. Age shmage.
6) Hughsie
5) There are no talks of bringing Bonds to the team.
4) Joba.
3) The Steinbrothers have shown they are not as quick as Papa to make big trades.
2) They are hungry for a title. Starving. Salivating. (Now I'm starving... for In N Out).
1) A-Rod.

Seven Year Itch
Monday, February 25, 2008
Seven years is a long stretch for spoiled Yankees fans (oxymoron). That is, as you are surely all too aware, the number of years that have passed since the Yankees last won themselves a beautiful bling-alicious World Series ring, years made all the more painful by the fact that those seven teams didn't simply fail to win a championship but crushed our souls by making it to the playoffs and then blowing it. Big time.

Take a moment to yourself and do a little gentle sobbing. I'll wait.

Ready? Moving on now:

The Yanks have been the divisional favorite for the majority of the past 10+ years, with the Red Sox serving as the default underdogs- I say "default" because there have been years in which the Bosox team was just as good as the Yanks', but the Yanks were looked at as the perennial champs. The teams have been talented, but being favored obviously didn't do too much (or anything) to boost the team's chances of winning. Personally, I'm convinced that 'twas the cockiness of those old-folk-infested teams that damned them- but that's a topic for another day. On the other hand, being tagged as second-place finishers has worked well for the Sox. They have pulled off some obnoxious comebacks (more gentle sobbing) and actually thrived in the same period that the Yanks have continued to falter.

This year, most statisticians, analysts, and many writers are pegging the Sox as division champions and Spring Training hasn't even started rolling yet. It would be a tad far-fetched to think of the Yankees as underdogs, but in effect, they are- in relation to the Red Sox anyway.

Their "underdog" status actually goes along well with the mojo of the Yankes this year. They've got a bevy of youngsters, a hip young manager (Girardino better act hip now, and prove me right. Put on those True Religion jeans, Joe [that was a transparent subliminal message to any YC reader that works for TR that I like but cannot afford their fine products]) and now a challenge: beat the Red Sox the hard way- from the underdog position.

I'm anticipating a huge year for the team. Feelin' positive, lovin' the youngsters, appreciating the veterans, jazzed about A-Rod, and happy with the Steinbrothers' decision to go with Girardi as hip young manager. They may not be "the favorite" for 2008, but I'd watch my back if I were a Red Sock. Sox. Whatever.

Just Ask A-Rodstradamus
Saturday, February 23, 2008
Just yesterday I was pontificating about the leadership skillz of Jeter and A-Rod, and unbeknownst to me, on Thursday A-Rod was doing some pontificating of his own about the Jeetster (I say "unbeknownst to me" because if you've been reading YC for the last week you're aware that I am currently holed up in the hospital- and no, anonymous commenter, not for a boob job- and thus have to rely on chats with the YCD for baseball scoop and at that point it's usually a day or two stale). After seeing how Jeter had come to camp looking lean and busting out of the gate sprinting like the dearly departed Seabiscuit (fun sidenote: the YCD used to take the YC to the Santa Anita Racetrack on Saturdays [let's overlook the fact that that probably wasn't the most appropriate hangout for a 6-year-old; I'll take my father-daughter bonding wherever I can get it] and let me bet on the horsies), A-Rod is predicting an MVP season for his pal Jeet (but not best friend, as was explained by A-Rod in an utterly pointless junior high-esque interview last year).

I like the fact that The Rod is being vocal about his faith in his teammate and his team as a whole. I'll take it as a positive sign for the honing of A-Rod's public appearance facade- surely I'm not the only one to whom it is painfully clear that the dude doesn't always present himself as well as he could in public?- and a good omen for Jeter's season (sidenote: my aunt, for whom English is a second language, was convinced that the idiom was in fact "good almond"). Since Jeter was recently referred to as the worst shortstop in baseball, I find it a little comforting that A-Rod commented on Jeet's lean mean form; I think we'd all like to see his name skyrocket to 2nd worst in 2008. As always, Jeet confirmed that he'd rather earn a World Series ring than an MVP trophy. That's nice and all and I'm sure he's being sincere, but I think it's safe to say he wouldn't mind claiming both titles.

Jeter's off-season prep and work thus far in Tampa impressed Girardi as well as A-Rod. Girardi agreed that he looked great and had been working hard to be ready for the season by eating a healthy diet in addition to working out. Personally I would imagine that most every player would have the same plan when getting ready for the season (save for Big Papi, maybe), but according to MLB.com Jeter's plan in years past was to eat as much as he possibly could to bulk up. If he has the MVP-caliber season A-Rod predicts, I suppose Jeet will be convinced to change his plans from "become a fatass even though it doesn't make sense" to "eat healthy because I can contribute more if I'm agile" permanently.

Captain Ron? Captain RON!!?
Friday, February 22, 2008
He may not get to wear a snazzy "C" on his jersey (such individual attention/glorification would certainly not be acceptable in the Yanks' house), but Jeterjeterpumpkineater is the captain of the team and works hard to lead his men into battle and eventually into championship-ville.

One problem, though: the Yankees have been championship-free since the inception of Jeter's tenure in the Captain Chair.

I'm not blaming the Jeet for the team's failures (soul-crushing, agonizing, yell-at-the-TV, maddening failures). The team captain is not responsible for every win or loss, but Jeter, who so many treat as infallible, hasn't had much success captain-izing his men in the post-season. His own post-season stats are plenty clutch-tastic, but apparently he puts his leadership job on the back burner when in actuality the team needs him most at that time! Maybe if he had that "C" on his jersey it'd be different.

This is not to say that ol' Jeter is not a fabulous player, chock full of raw talent and of course all those much-cherished intangibles (and sidenote: I am 100% a believer in the value of the unmeasurable "goods" like attitude, teamwork, spirit [see Duncan, Shelly] and the like). Nay, he is a vital member of the team and it wouldn't be the same without him.

That said, now that A-Rod is on board and will be for the next 26584392 years (and perhaps more! it is not out of the realm of possibility that at age 41 the Rodster wouldn't still be worthy of another contract...but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, kiddos) some folks may start looking at him as a potential leader. It is unlikely that anyone would ever actually usurp Jeter's position as the C-Man, but I'd venture to guess that with his status as the undisputed best player on the team, he might be expected to step up and start being more vocal about encouraging and inspiring his teammates. He has not proven himself to be the outspoken and extroverted person Jeter is, and talent alone obviously doesn't always indicate who the captain of the team should be (look at the SF Giants: Bonds carried the team talent-wise but there was no chance in hell that his teammates would look up to him as a leader; on the other end of the spectrum there was John Franco, who remained a revered captain of the Mets long after he made any real contribution to the team), so when it comes down to it, it is up to A-Rod to determine whether he should work on his leadership skills with Jim Fannin.

We all love Jeter, and his intangibles are a big part of that love stew. A-Rod has gotten a lot of flack for everything from making too much money to not being clutch to being a diva (PS: I cannot use that word without thinking of Glitter), and I can think of no better remedy for his tarnished rep than to start emulating Jeter's leadership techniques.

Still no "C"'s for anyone though.

Top Ten Tuesdays: Like The Deserts Miss the Rain
Tuesday, February 19, 2008
I've been "hanging out" here in the hospital (and on the fun-o-meter, in case you were wondering, I rank the hospital a few notches above gravedigging, and about 234628736482734874 below a trip to Disneyland) for about a week now, and the lack of all the comforts of home is really starting to get to the YC. No Dr. Pepper, no DVR, and worst of all, no baseball.

Top Ten Baseball Related Things I'm Missing

10. Checking mlbtraderumors.com incessantly in hopes of some miraculous Pavano for Dr. Pepper trade.
9. My morning scan of various baseball blogs, including Deadspin, FanHouse, Peter Abraham, and Something Awful (I know SA ain't a baseball, or even sports blog- and actually, probs more of a website than a blog- but I always include it in my morning blog readin', so it's on this list. Deal with it, suckas.)
8. Sportscenter, despite the fact that at the present time the only baseball commentary they provide surrounds Roger Clemens. They'll come around soon enough. I hope.
7. Arguing/debating with people about teams, trades, prospects, stats, or even the hotness of Doug Mientkicantspellhisname's wife. Doctors aren't too keen on me interrupting a conversation about blood work with "So, do you think Girardi is up to the pressure that comes with managing a team full of both revered veterans and spirited youngsters?"
6. The Dugout.
5. Cheap Seats on ESPN Classic. Even if they're not watching a baseball event, you can count on my Sklar boys to slip in a Steve Garvey joke or two.
4. Stalking you readers by looking at my referrer tracker 100 times a day to see how you found your way here. Did you click a link on deathtoyankeeschick.com? Was I a search engine result when you Googled "moderately amusing baseball blog to look at while I wait for 5PM so I can finally leave work"?
3. Posting Fun Fact 'O the Day. I don't even know if any of y'all ever scan your eyeballs ever so slightly to the right to allow your corneas, retinas, rods and cones take in the fact and accompanying photograph, but I'll tell you this: I so enjoy searching for interesting and/or funny factoids and pictures that I would continue to post those simply for my own amusement.
2. Spring training. I really did want to go.
1. Googling "Pavano". Try it, it's fun!

I Wish I Was Comish
Monday, February 18, 2008
A faithful YC reader emailed me the other day posing a very interesting question:

"If you were commissioner and were going to expand the league, what would your plan be? How many teams would you add? Which division would you put them in? What cities would host them?"

I like this question on so many levels. For one, I'm always game for broadening people's exposure and access to the glory and pure golden magic that is baseball, and economically speaking, bringing a new team into certain areas has the potential of boosting the sad situation in some floundering cities. Of course, I also look forward to answering this delightful inquiry for the simple fact that I enjoy any fleeting moments of deluding myself into thinking I could have some control over the goings on of the sport.

Now that Miami has confirmed that it will be building a brand spankin' new stadium in which the Marlins can lose for 4 years and then appear to come out of nowhere and beat the Yankees and we no longer have to ponder whether they'll be switching locales, the rest of the country is essentially up for grabs. Twas a tad tough decision, but I've come up with a solution that I believe would satisfy fans, players, and the cities themselves.

1) Boston - NL East: Yes, I know that Beantown already has a team, but if there's room for 2 teams in LA, Chicago, and NYC, why not Boston? Surely there are enough people in the city to support a 2nd team fan-wise - that city is nuts for sports, don't deny it - and hopefully a rivalry between this new team and the Red Sox would ensure, or perhaps one between them and the Mets, to counter the BoSox-Yanks fights. Clearly this city does not need the economic boost a new team could possibly provide, but there's only so much I can do, folks. I haven't thought of a name for this team just yet; I will need help in that aspect. The Boston Chowderheads? The Massachusettes Tea-Haters? I'll keep mulling this over.

2) New Orleans - AL Central: Here's one where my economic boost plan comes into play. Those of you that are loyal readers should be well aware that my empathy and sensitivity towards others far surpasses that of 99.99% of "normal people" (I've been known to burst into tears at the very thought of a homeless person, have given food that I had just purchased moments before for myself [perhaps this is why I am now sitting in the hospital being made to drink ensure...yes, I am impugning hobos as the cause of my illness!], and a few times have gotten back on the freeway in the opposite direction just so I could the turn around and re-exit in the proper lane to give cash to whichever homeless gentleman was manning the off-ramp at that time), so I feel that a new team in NoLA could be a positive thing (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie can't do it all on their own). I'm putting them in the AL central because I think the division needs a shakeup. Until the Tigers magically got good a couple years ago there wasn't much to say about the division. Maybe the "New Orleans FEMA Disaster" (I'm not married to the name; I'm open to suggestions) could become rivals with the Royals.

3) Las Vegas - AL West: The top reason for choosing this division for my new Vegas team is that I have long held a resentment towards the fact that the blasted division has just 4 teams. While I understand the fact that the league must be made up of even numbers of teams, that doesn't stop me from losing sleep over the discrepancy. With 5 teams in the ALW, the competition for division winner can be amped up and it makes sense geographically, too. As for choosing Ls Vegas as the primo location, I believe with all the sinful tourism, a shiny new ballpark and a glittery new ball team would prove to be yet another fine destination for those sinners, right along with that frightening roller coaster and the bevy of hookers (I'm sorry ladies, I meant "escorts"). The only foreseeable problem here is that since Vegas is primarily a tourist destination, recruiting hard core fans could prove troublesome. However, I'm confident that the poker dealers, pimps, and chronic gamblers can join in with the tourists to support the team, which I've tentatively named "The Vegas Craps".

4) Tijuana - NL West: We tried to get Canadian troops rallied for some sweet baseball action, but even though the Blue Jays have maintained a relatively healthy fan base (largely, I'm sure, due to the Clemens/World Series heyday) the overall Canadian reaction has been dismal (poor Youppi). On the other hand, the league has been remiss in looking southward for expansion. The Latin community is rife with both aficionados and potential talent. What's more, T.J. definitely fits the bill when it comes to areas in need of an economic shakeup! As for location, TJ is perfect for the NL West--it's even closer to San Diego than SD is to LA. As for naming the team, I'm finding myself unable to come up with anything that doesn't sound remotely (unintentionally of course!! The YC is an equal opportunity employer, dater, fan, writer, etc.!!) racist. Maybe "The TJ Politically Correct Ambiguous Mexican Reference" will have to suffice.

Whew! This turned into quite a lengthy read. If you'd think that being in a hospital would leave you bored and with a lot of time to write baseball crap* you'd be 100% correct. If you actually read this whole thing, pat yourself on the back and then join me in discussing the pros and cons of my choices down in the comments section.

*if you have any suggestions for things I should write about whilst I rot in boredom, please email me.

New Candidates For Best Quote Ever
Saturday, February 16, 2008
Greetings from the sanatorium, friends and foes! Thank y'all for the kind emails--I haven't been lobotomized via an ice pick through my eye socket a la Rose Kennedy, so I'll consider it a success.

I must say that I really did select a perfect time to be out of commission, as there is jack shit going on in the baseball world. It seems as though the only thing I've "missed" (and let's use that word loosely here, folks) is a few additional chapters in the Clemens vs. McNameanie vs. Dandy Andy vs. Baseball Fans saga, and to have an excuse to ignore that is the best luck a gal could ask for!

This is not to say that I haven't been keeping up with the dramarama. I'm sucked into the vortex and can't get out, so there's no way even a doctor's orders could keep me away. At this point we all know the story so there is no need to re-hash it here, but in my readings of various recaps, analyses, and synopses, I've come accross some "words of wisdom" from several of the involved parties that may rival my previously declared Best Quote Ever, that of Sir Sly Stallone and his romantic relationship with HGH. You make the call:

"I'm very thankful and grateful for this day to come. I'm glad for the opportunity finally. And, you know, I hope I get, and I know I will have the opportunity to come here to Washington again under different terms." -Roger Clemens

"Andy Pettitte is my friend. He was my friend before this. He will be my friend after this again. I think Andy has misheard. I think he misremembers." -Rog again

"I have to live with myself. And one day, I have to give an account to God and not to nobody else of what I've done with my life." -Dandy Andy

"It's hard to believe you, sir. I hate to say that. You're one of my heroes. But it's hard to believe." -Representative Elijah Cummings, to the Rocket.

"I told the investigators I injected 3 people, two of whom I know confirmed my account. The 3rd is sitting at this table." -Brian McNameanie

"You're here under oath, and yet we have heard lie after lie" -Representative Dan Burton

You've Driven Me to Illness (Mental and Otherwise)
Wednesday, February 13, 2008
That's right, folks, the Yankees Chick is sick and I'm blaming each and every one of you. I suppose some blame could also be thrown on Clemens and McNameanie and their maddeningly drawn-out battle - what blogger/pseudo-"sportswriter" wouldn't become ill after having to attempt to say something moderately interesting on the story day after goddamn day!? - and on baseball in general for insisting on having such a long off-season, but it's more fun to blame you, don't you think?

Anyway, regardless of where the blame actually falls (probs Pavano), I am indeed a tad on the ill side and henceforth must take a couple weeks off to head to a sanatorium (do those still exist? I enjoy outdated words. Poppycock! Hogwash! Malarkey!). Methinks tis the perfect time to healthify myself, as Spring Training is still a few weeks off and aside from the aforementioned Clemens/McNamee bullshit there ain't much for a gal to write about anyway.

So! I'll be moderately incommunicado, but because of the pure golden magic of Blackberry technology, I'll still be posting from time to time and getting emails and whatnot. The "Fact O' The Day" will probably become more of a "Fact O' The When YC Gets Around To It", "Top Ten Tuesdays" might turn into "Top Ten... Whenever", and I probs won't be deluging the site with 23890234809 posts a week, but you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that I won't disappear completely!

WHEW! How could you have carried on without me?!!??! You couldn't. You wouldn't. It's just not possible.

ps: Just to clarify, no, I'm not on drugs - this isn't a trip to rehab. I'm a good girl.

"Under The Gun" takes a look at one player from each team who will bear all the pressure for the upcoming '08 season.

For the first time in many, MANY years -- really, folks, I'm talking about a LOT of years here -- the Yankees have changed their philosophy from "out with the new, in with the old" to a much more effective "send these old folks out to pasture and bring the young 'uns in from the barn". Besides having a great ring to it, that ideology makes the team a lot of fun to watch.

The downside to it is the pressure that falls on those aforementioned youngsters.

Clemens vs McNamee, Congress Style
Today is the big Congress PED showdown between Clemens and McNamee (oh, and I guess some other law-makin' folk are there too or something), kiddos!!! I was planning on writing something later today to sum up all the thrills, but this live blog from my compatriots over at FanHouse is a great read and does a much better job of keeping you in the loop than a summary from YC would later!

Enjoy, munecas:

2008 Season Previews: San Francisco Giants
Welcome to the 6th of 30 "2008 Team Previews", where I'm - you guessed it! - offering up a little preview of the 2008 season for each of the teams. Nothing super fancy, (I'm not writing books here munecas), just a few notes on what major moves the teams made over the winter and a thought or two on their upcoming season. I'm going in reverse order of 2007 standings, so next up is....

San Francisco Giants

2007 Record: .438 (71-91), Last place in NL West

2006 Record: .472 (76-85), 3rd place in NL East

Who’s Out: Barry Bonds (Cheater Cheater Pumpkin Eater), Pedro Feliz (3B), Ryan Klesko (1B)

Who’s In: Hitting Coach Carney Lansford, Aaron Rowand (OF)

Notes: Not since the deadball era has there been a team that seemed to care so little about offense. Apparently they are planning to rely on Rowand to hit for the entire team, or on new hitting coach Carnster to teach the rest of the boys how to swing their bats effectively. Unlike the O's and the Marlins, who are realistic about their situations and wise enough to forgo spending big bucks on a longshot in favor of rebuilding and focusing on the future, the Giants simply have not accepted the fact that they don't have a chance in the division for at least the next few years. Last year's signing of Barry Baked Ziti and the Rowand signing this year are evidence of that notion. This year would have been a perfect opportunity for the team to simmer down on the signings and stockpile prospects, and they missed the boat big time.

Clemens to McNamee: Let's Take This Legal Biz Up a Notch

The Roger Clemens vs Brian McNamee battle has been heating up more with each passing day, and while it probably wont be reaching critical mass until they hook up with Congress tomorrow, the water continues to boil today.

The Rocket initiated a lawsuit against his former trainer back in early January in response to what he viewed as defamation; in case you've been completely out of the loop, McNamee was a key source of info in Senator Mitchell's epic steroids report, calling out many players as juice abusers, Rocket included. Roger has vehemently denied the allegations, so the defamation suit was the logical next step in his all-out crusade to prove his innocence (or at least lack of guilt).

Top Ten Tuesdays: Get The F Off My Pitching Mound
The Yankees have made some ugly signings over the years. This is not to say that other teams are immune to busts and lack of foresight, but over the course of my lifetime it seems that the Yanks take the cake (I don't like cake) when it comes to acquiring pitchers that prove to be huge busts. HUGE, disappointing, borderline insanity-inducing, busts. Feel free to shed a tear or two. I know I have.

Top Ten Biggest Pitching Busts I've Witnessed In My Lifetime*

10) Mike Stanton
9) Andy Hawkins
8) Jeff Weaver
7) Kei Igawa
6) Randy Johnson
5) Jaret Wright
4) Kevin Brown
3) Farnsworthless
2) Hideki Irabu
1) Pavano

*Technically I did not "witness" some of these as I was born in 1983 and obviously just a wee schoolgirl... but you know what I mean.

Let's all just face the facts and surrender right now: This Roger Clemens PED saga will never end. Ever.

Earlier today FanHouse's own Josh Alpner discussed a Newsday story which reported that Rep. Tom Davis, who was on Senator Mitchell's committee, corroborated Mitchell's claims that Andy Pettitte had at one point asked trainer Brian McNamee for "the stuff you give Roger." With Davis backing up McNamee's story, Pettitte's appearance (or lack thereof now that he has been recused) in front of Congress becomes less important.

"Under The Gun" takes a look at one player from each team who will bear all the pressure for the upcoming '08 season.

Three of the most pressure-inducing circumstances a ballplayer can face in his career are being a highly-anticipated rookie, the pressure that comes with playing for one of the most popular teams in the league, and having to prove yourself worthy of a huge contract.

In 2007, Daisuke Matsuzaka had to deal with all three of those challenges. He had a good year, accumulating a record of 15-12 and a 4.40 ERA, but Red Sox fans are going to expect more from him in the second year of his 6 year, $52 million contract. The team also paid $51+ million as a posting fee, and while that is not included in his salary, fans and detractors alike tend to take that into account when determining whether he is worth all of that cold hard cash.

2008 Season Previews: Florida Marlins

the dog is 10 times cuter than the marlinFlorida Marlins

2007 Record: .438 (71-91), Last place in NL East

2006 Record: .481 (78-84), 4th place in NL East

Who’s Out: Marcos Carvajal (P), Aaron Boone (1B), Miguel Olivo (C), Dontrelle Willis (P), Miguel Cabrera (3B)

Who’s In: Luis Gonzalez (OF), Mark Hendrickson (P), Dallas McPherson (INF), 6 prospects in return for D-Train and Cabrera

Notes: It seems like just yesterday that the Yanks painfully lost to this team, but those days of glory are in the past at this point. They are apparently trying to set a record for lowest payroll in the history of organized sports (I believe my nephew's little league team has surpassed them simply by providing the kids with shirts and helmets); the Willis/Cabrera trade will save them many millions of dollars. Money, of course, cannot be used as a perfect indicator of a team's eventual success (just ask Big Stein), but it is not the lack of salary that will leave this team out of the running again but the lack of mature talent (well, with the exception of Gonzo, who fancies himself to be a man capable of extreme influence). They have focussed their efforts on stockpiling players in their minor league system, which, judging by the kids they have scouted out and traded for, will likely prove fruitful in the not-so-distant future. Hardcore Marlins fans (5 of you? 6, max) will have fun monitoring the farm and anticipating the eventual arrival of all of these prospects - and likely a return to out-of-last-place-ville in a few short years!

How Bout I Just Join The Platoon For Good Measure
Monday, February 11, 2008
The Yanks' roster is certainly shaping up quite nicely, but their one question mark seems to be first base. Like last year, the Cash Man appears to be content with the concept of utilizing a "platoon" of sorts to fill the position rather than the usual "here you go sir, you, one man, will be responsible for playing this particular position during the vast majority of the forthcoming season."

While as a general rule I'd think that the one man, one job (well, plus a backup bench/utility dude or two, of course) would be the way to go, with the Giambi contract (he ain't going anywhere), Matsui injury, and the uncertainty as to how Duncan and Ensberg will do, the platoon is admittedly the best way to go. As far as we can tell right now, the platoon will mainly consist of Shelley "Spirit Coordinator" Duncan, newbie Morgan Ensberg, and a little Giambino. Giambi, as we are WELL aware, is simply not a good candidate for everyday play on the field - in fact, he should be used there only in the case of a dire emergency, like if Pavano someone manages to involve another player in one of his freak incidents - and therefore will likely spend most of his days at DH. I would imagine that Ensberg's poor offensive performance would preclude the team from wanting him to play a gazillion games, but I suppose he could surprise us all. As for the Shell-ster, who knows how he will do? He could end up being a champ both at the plate and in the field, but we really don't know just yet with his relative inexperience.

The other obvious problem with the platoon is that it forces the team to rotate between a bunch of guys when it comes to DH. Giambi is considered "the" DH; however, he will have to share that role with Matsui, because the surgery he had on his knee last year prevents him from being truly effective out in left field, and what's more, when Matsy DOES play in the field that will put Damon on the bench and I'm sure into that DH spot at least occasionally! Not to mention Posada - even though he's not THAT old and crippled... yet - he will surely be spending a few games as DH.

In other words, the team has about 239808239871243098 DH's, which is all fine and good, and approximately 1/3 of a first baseman.

In my estimate, all that shuffling could go either way: it's possible that the rest and days off (at least partial days without having to play in the field) those DHs will receive, combined with the talents of a few first basemen will be just what the team needs to keep everybody fresh. On the other hand, it could be that none of those first basemen really work out and the lack of consistency shakes up the team in a bad way and not ever allow things to congeal properly.

Can't we just get Nick Johnson back? The Nat's have no use for him now that they've got Dmitri Young, and I sure do like him. Thoughts?

Kevin Youkilis Is Wearing $3 Million Sox

--------------------------------------------------------

The Red Sox and their first baseman Kevin Youkilis have avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing on a one-year deal worth $3 million for his services. That is quite a jump from last year, when he made just $424,500. At the start of the arbitration process Youk had asked for a salary of $3.7 million, to which the Red Sox countered with an offer of $2,525,000, so the $3 million agreement certainly seems fair to both sides monetarily.

Money aside, I'd have to say that with the current market as it is, where 5th-rate relievers are signing contracts for several million dollars and utility players are earning $1 million -- or more -- per year, the Sox are on the winning side of this deal.

2006 Record: .432 (70-92), 4th place in AL East

Who's Out: Pitching coach Leo Mazzone, Kris Benson (P), Miguel Tejada (SS), Erik Bedard (P)

Notes: The O's are clearly in rebuilding mode, a mode I strongly advocate for teams in their position. They've suffered 10 straight losing seasons, and president of operations Andy MacPhail wisely realized that they weren't going to bust out of the streak if they kept cruising with the roster in its current state. They scored a bevy of prospects in return their big name players - Tejada and Bedard - and ditched dead weight in Kris (and Anna) Benson, which is certainly a good start towards a future winning team. Distant future.

Great news, Yankees fans: Carl Pavano has arrived at the Yanks' minor league complex in Tampa and actually touched a baseball for the first time in approximately one year (I was about to type "two years", but then I remembered his glorious performance on opening day last year -- and on that note, baseball fans, one year later I still find it amusing that circumstances forced him into the starting role on day one)!

Lest you get too excited, please note that his "workout" consisted of playing catch for precisely 12 minutes, and it took two sessions to get that clock up to that total 12 minutes.

Verdict: My Brain Hurts
Friday, February 08, 2008
hot abs, rockettea) sweet chest shot, Rog. b) you too, Deb.

Brian McNameanie is either an absolute goldmine of steroids information or certifiably insane. I suppose it could be a combination of the two; that explanation would make the most sense to me.

Earlier this week it was the stockpile of bloody medical supplies, and now the man is reporting that HE ALSO INJECTED THE ROCKETTE (AKA Rog's wife) with HGH!!! She and Rog appeared in an issue of Sports Illustrated back in '03 and McNameanie explained that the reasoning behind it was that the Rockette wanted to look her best for the bikini shot.

This all makes me want to take a nap. Wake me up when Trainer Boy comes up with the next chapter in this epic novel - perhaps some photos of him shooting up a baby or hidden camera footage of Rog cooking up some homemade steroids with a recipe he found on BALCO's website.

What Is This, Seinfeld?
Through the power and magic of YouTube, a video surfaced this week of Pedro "Who's Your Daddy? Oh Yeah, I Remember Who" Martinez and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal participating in a delightful cock fight (must... resist... sexual... jokes...) down in the DR a couple years ago. The "sport" (hobby? What would this activity be classified as?) is legal in the DR, so the backlash for the dudes adds up to nothing more than some outrage from PETA (and what DOESN'T fire those nutcases up, really?) and subsequent promise from the MLB that the league certainly does not condone animal cruelty - in case you thought otherwise. Whew! For the record, neither do I.

The video has been taken off YouTube, so don't get too excited and/or incensed at the prospect of seeing the two honorary soltadores getting in on the fighting action.

I hope they at least ate the roosters that lost. Put them to some delicious use.

2007 Record: .426 (69-93), last place in AL Central

2006 Record: .383 (62-100), what do you think their standing was? I'm sorry :(

Who’s Out: The holders of those coaching positions I listed below, David Riske (P), Billy Buckner (P [no relation to Bill {sidenote: I really don't think should be saddled with all the blame for the downfall of the '86 Sox}]).

Who’s In: Hitting coach Mike Barnett , pitching coach Bob McClure , 3rd base coach Luis Silverio , bench coach Dave Owen, 1st base coach Rusty Kuntz (best. name. ever), bullpen coach John Mizerock, Colby Lewis (P), Yasuhiko Yabuta (P), Jose Guillen (OF), Alberto Callaspo (INF [and owner of a name that is also amusing]), Ron Mahay (P), Miguel Olivo (C), Brett Tomko (P).

Notes: Look at all those additions to the team! I can't predict whether they will make some magically vast improvement for the team, but at the very least it shows that the team is not content to roll over and accept their status as perennial bottom of the barrel-ers. They are clearly hoping that with the overhaul of their coaching staff the team will be re-energized or hypnotized into better playing. Prediction: I'm going to go out a limb and put them above the White Sox for a 4th place finish in the division in 2008. They came within 3 games of escaping last place in 2007, and their additions to the team combined with the White Sox's apparent lack of caring and re-signing of King of Crazy Ozzie Guillen surely give them a decent shot.

Uh Oh Spaghetti-O
Thursday, February 07, 2008
I've discussed the Rocket-Steroids-McNameanie-Congress hoopla approximately 8923419018937 times here on the bloggity by now, and while at one point I was pretty sick of it, I now find myself shamefully addicted (much like my proclivity to enjoy such television programming as Rock of Love [AKA Rock of Skanks {Jessica and Kristy Jo are my faves, in case you were wondering}] and Degrassi). In the wise words of Depeche Mode, I just can't get enough.

Due to the lack of substantial evidence in Senator "Don't You DARE Mess With Me, Constituents, Or I Will Put You On Some List So Fast You Won't Know What Hit You" Mitchell's report and the rage/passion-fueled denial blitzkrieg on Rog's part, I've been throwing most of my support behind the Rocket (but let's be honest here, carinos, that is largely influenced by the fact that I just really like the dude), but the latest in the saga may throw a point or two into McNameanie's court. Trainer-boy allegedly turned over some actual physical evidence back in January (where has this news been for a month? It's pretty juicy, and that ain't no pun [yes it is]). He claims he has syringes and nasty gauze pads with some of Rog's blood on it, which have been sent to a lab to see if they do indeed contain blood. If the lab confirms that the goods do indeed have blood intact, the next step would be for prosecutors to attempt to get a court order forcing the Rocket to pony up some of his own DNA to see if it matches.

All of this begs a few questions of your Yankees Chick:
  • Why the F did McNameanie have a stockpile of used bio-hazard medical supplies? Perhaps he was creating a shrine or runs a fetish website dedicated to naughty nurses and HGH.
  • If the lab results come back and indicate that whatever the hell was on those disgusting syringes was NOT blood, what else could it possibly be?!
  • Assuming it IS blood, what would prosecutors need to do to get that court order to demand some Rocket DNA?
Help me, dear readers. Help me understand.

2007 Record: .420 (68-94), Last place in National League

Who’s In: Manager John Russell, Kevin Thompson (OF), Phil Dumatrait (P), Jimmy Barthmaier (P), Ty Taubenheim (P), Chris Gomez (INF), TJ Beam (P), X Nady (OF), Jaret Wright (P)

Notes: The good news is that after last season, there's nowhere to go but up! Jim Tracy's unsuccessful tenure is done and John Russell, who has managed in the minors but will be a rookie when it comes to big league managing, will be taking the helm. Aside from the manager swap, what will probably amount to be their biggest move came not via a trade but an extension: All-Star 2B Freddy Sanchez is locked up through 2010. They've got decent starting pitching with Matt Morris and some homegrown folks like Gorzelanny, Snell, Maholm and Duke, but those kids haven't exactly proven themselves to be pinnacles of consistency or non-injury. I'm no Pirates expert, but I've got to say that I don't see much hope for them for the next couple years. That said, though, they have youngsters and look how the tide changed quickly with the Rockies last year and the Tigers before that, so give this team a couple years and let's see how things shape up!

Top Ten Tuesdays: I Still Love You, Roger
Tuesday, February 05, 2008
Just a day after BFF Dandy Andy met with the law-makin' folk, Rog had a 5-hour sit-down with Congress today.* He was under oath, of course, and for the 6th time denied any juice use of any kind ever in the history of the universe (the other 5, in case you've lost track, were: the initial statement after Mitchy-boy's report became public, the YouTube-esque video on his website, his appearance on 60 Mins, the rabidly emotional press conference in Houston, and then the defamation lawsuit he slapped on McNameanie). Other than saying that it was "great" to be able to tell them that he didn't use PEDs (denying the allegations has officially become his full-time job and passionate hobby), the Rogster didn't give us many details about what the hell they talked about for five goddamn hours.

As I've said a buncha times now, the vehement-ness of all this denial leads the ol' YC to seriously doubt the veracity Mitchell's claim. Even if Roger is as dumb as a brick - and I have yet seen the results of his SAT or IQ tests, so I can't attest to his intelligence at this time - one would assume that he would have some smarty-pants lawyers and PR peeps at his disposal to tell him to shut his trap and quit the denial crusade if he were lying, no?

To be honest, I have found myself not only starting to believe the Rog, but not even caring if he IS lying. I just like him too much. It's shamefully uncontrollable.

Top Ten Reasons I Don't Really Care If Roger Juiced

10) The passionate denials of steroid use! Such dedication! The devotion to the cause!
9) 2 words: Cingular commercial.
8) He gave back that car the Yanks gave him upon his "retirement".
7) The Waldman-hysteria-inducing announcement of his imminent return to the Yanks in '07.
6)"I wish there was a bar I could send opposing teams to and get them hammered or something — I could tell my buddies in New York to leave their places open or something. Playing for the Yankees, guys come at you extremely hard. I have to be ready or I'll be embarrassed.'' I've had similar thoughts before... "if only I could get my boss hammered nightly so I can come in late all the time!"
5) His fine acting performance in a Simpsons episode during which he clucked - quite believably! - like a chicken.
4) 7 Cy Youngs.
3) He gave all 4 of his kids names starting with "K". This is so sickeningly cute I kind of like it.
2) Anyone that angers Kyle Farnsworthless is good in my book.
1) The rarity of an old man being so good at something. Anything, really.

* Again... it's just so wonderful to see that our ever-vigilant government is working hard to solve the ails of society. While they're chattin' it up with athletes, I'm sitting over here shelling out thousands of dollars for school, hundreds for health insurance, and the entire US population is in knee-deep in debt.
